ON LIGHT IN PUBLIC PLACES

The works from the past three years have dealt with indirect light. Light which is placed behind a form reflecting a soft energy, illuding to space, to openings, to concepts of the infinite.

Light is a changing element dependent on the given environment, disappearing in an area of intense daylight and slowly appearing as the day comes to an end. Working with light, I enter an area of research and investigation. There are many unknown and undiscovered areas of light energy and the potential of this energy is powerful.

An important part of the work I create is the concept of light as color. Since my background is that of a painter, I have a strong attraction towards color and color systems. The additive theory of color becomes particulary fascinating. Using the system, unseen colors can be made visible. By overlapping two complementary colors of light a primary color will appear. This process has a magical quality and corresponds to the process of the mind when it enters the nonverbal area of visions and dreams. One approaches a domain that breaks down barriers and opens up new dimensions.

I experience light and color as a force creating space. A space which relates to the spiritual quality of man, dealing with the inner sense of being. Light and color in this direction become a source of harmony and balance representing at the same time movement and change.

Working as an artist I fluctuate between projects dealing with inner and outer spaces, in outdoor and in indoor areas. Indoors I take into account the bare room as basic architectural form of limitation. In these closed spaces light is easier to control, there are fewer distractions. Dealing with light in an outdoor public area is more demanding due to elements of distraction such as traffic, buildings, and the widespread sky. Here light has to be more articulate and expansive to compete with the multi-impulses of the city. Finding the specific form of light placement is a challenge. Once the right solution is found the public work becomes an encompassing expression. These light installations transcend the city scape of its material and commercial aspects.

The light piece with its metaphysical character becomes part of daily life and exists within the context of everyday experiences. Light can integrate itself into the open room and move into the rhythm of the urban pulse. Leaving traces of unspoken message, the art piece deals with pure light and color energy.
